Choosing a Home Business
Why start a home business if it won't be successful? There are so many possibilities for a home business that choosing the right one can be an overwhelming task. Our purpose here is to begin eliminating some of the possibilities, narrowing the field so that the decision process is reduced to a manageable level.
Why not look at all the possibilities? Because, if you put your time and effort into a business you don't enjoy, where is the incentive to go to work every day? You increase your chances of success when you are doing something you love. If you wanted to hate your job you would stay in corporate America.
So take out some paper and a pencil and get ready to explore the home business possibilities that you already have.
On your first sheet of paper (yes we will use more than one) start listing the skills that you have. Leave no stone unturned. List everything that you can do. What do you do at work, at home, for a hobby or recreation? Even if you think it is unimportant put it on your list. If you were asked to make the recording for the answering machine at work because you have a nice speaking voice write it down. Nothing is unimportant and something may prove to be the perfect skill to build a home business. Refer to the List of Skills and Accomplishments to help you get started.
Now, on a new sheet of paper write out a description of your ideal day. Be very specific and list all the details you can, even the color of the walls if it is important to you. Don't forget to include the people that will be a part of your day, the time schedule you will keep, or the place where you will spend most of your day.
If you don't yet know the exact type of work you will be doing, that's OK. Just describe the type of work, such as working on the computer, calling on people at their office, or working outdoors. The details of the exact type of work will come later. What's important is to envision your work environment. If you can define your work day well enough, you will more easily determine what type of business to start by eliminating the ones that don't fit into your description.
For example: If you describe an outdoor setting, then sitting at computer all day will not be your ideal business, no matter how much money you can make. You won't be happy because it will seem too much like work.
Here is an important point: A home business will require a lot of your time, more than a traditional job, but if you love what you do then it won't seem like work.
Take a look at a sample Ideal Day. This should get you going in the right direction.
What parts of your ideal day do you already have? Are you working in a field that you enjoy, do you already own your dream home, or do you need to change everything? Figure out what is missing and you will be on your way to discovering the best home business for you.
