Make Your Hobby Your
Business
What makes a hobby an ideal business? It is something we now do for free. Any hobby can serve as the basis for a home business, including watching television. (Take note of all the publications about "soaps".)
Most often, when we think of turning a hobby into a business, we think of making and selling items. This is the most natural course and many people are engaged in this business. Products may be marketed at fairs, retail stores, through mail order, and on the internet. If your hobby doesn't involve producing an item, or if you would like to expand your business, then try these ideas.
1. Sell items related to your hobby.
Most hobbies require some special equipment or supplies. Find sources for these supplies and make your own catalog of specialty items.
2. Teach your hobby to others.
There are many places you can teach your classes, such as, retail stores related to your hobby or at community universities. A variety of courses may be offered from beginning to advanced levels. A good subject for a short class is to demonstrate how to use the tools and supplies. Bring your catalog so that class participants can order the item from you afterwards. Have plenty of hand-outs available for your students to take home and be sure to include your contact information on each piece.
3. Lecture about your hobby.
Many groups seek out entertaining lecturers for meetings and special events. Develop a lecture on some aspect of your hobby which will appeal to a general audience. Once you have gained a reputation, you will be able to command higher fees. Bring along your products, catalog, or class schedule to give to attendees to promote your business even more.
4. Write about your hobby.
Magazines and newsletter are always on the lookout for good copy that will appeal to their readers. This may include general articles about the hobby or how-to articles, complete with instructions. Also, consider publishing your own newsletter or how-to book about your hobby.
Use one, or more of these ideas to build your hobby into a lucrative business. It won't seem like work when it is what you love to do.
