How to Write a Press Release

Newspapers and magazines are always looking for something newsworthy to print, so take advantage of this by submitting a press release about your business.

A press release is not an advertisement and should not resemble an ad in any way. Ads won't interest readers, but a story about a new product or service will catch the reader's attention.

Follow these easy steps to create your own press release:

1. Make the headline compelling

You want to catch the editor's eye immediately. If the title isn't interesting, your release will end up in the trash.

2. Answer who, what, where, when, and how in the first paragraph

Here is the place to really describe what is new and interesting about your business. Make it shine, but don't try to sell. This is an announcement, not an advertisement.

3. Include contact information

If you want readers to respond, then put down the information they will need to do business with you.

4. Mention any endorsements

Do you have some testimonials from satisfied clients? You can use them in your press release, provided you have the client's permission.

5. Finish with background information on your company

Write a brief description about your company in the last paragraph. If you are just starting, say so, and describe your qualifications, background, etc. Let your enthusiasm show but, again, don't sell.

6. Prepare your release for submission

In the upper left corner write your complete contact information in case a reporter wants to contact you for more information. This may be the same information as step #3.

In the upper right corner write: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (using all caps.)

Type your title about one third of the way down the page followed by 3 spaces; double spacethe rest of your copy.

Now, send your release to all the publications your customers read. Maybe, as a result of your press release, a reporter will call you to do a feature story on your business. There isn't anything better than free publicity!
